HOW PEDIATRIC SPEECH-LANGUAGE PATHOLOGY CAN IMPROVE YOUR CHILD’S COMMUNICATION ABILITIES

Pediatric speech-language pathologists will work with children and teens to help them communicate more effectively by honing their verbal and non-verbal communication skills. They work closely with families to assess each child’s strengths and needs, and will develop an individualized treatment plan which can be used through early intervention, in school, or at home.

While every child develops at their own pace, pediatric speech-language pathology may be beneficial if your child struggles with the following skills:

  • Children with language delays may struggle to understand written or spoken messages (receptive language), express their own thoughts or ideas verbally or physically (expressive language), or using language in a socially appropriate manner to communicate with others (pragmatics).
  • Children who struggle with speech may have difficulties pronouncing certain sounds, words, or phrases clearly and fluently.
  • Feeding and swallowing. Children with feeding and swallowing difficulties may not be able to chew or swallow certain foods with ease.

Depending on your child’s age and development, the treatment plan may focus on anything from verbal speech and listening skills to improving your child’s chewing and swallowing abilities. Exercises may include:

  • Singing songs or discussing pre-selected topics to improve their articulation of thoughts or certain sounds.
  • Completing a motivational obstacle course where they must follow specific directions.
  • Repeating exercises to strengthen their throat, jaw, or tongue muscles.

Waiting to enroll your child in therapy programs could result in a loss of progress or missing a critical period in their development. If you believe that your child could benefit from pediatric speech-language pathology or early intervention, it’s important that you schedule an evaluation as soon as possible, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
